Santa for the Win
With the exception of MLPs, securities markets continued to deliver robust gains across the board in December as the markets began to divine measurable rate cuts by the Fed in 2024. US Large Cap Equity delivered a 5.3% return while the Core Fixed Income category gained 3.6% for the month capping a strong year largely driven largely by the performance the Nasdaq 100® companies.
Eleven of twelve categories in the Nasdaq Dorsey Wright Explore portion of HANDLS Indexes delivered healthy gains in December. REITs led the way with a 9% return, benefiting from a continued rally in the bond market that drove down financing costs for the interest-rate sensitive category. MLPs were the laggard down 3.5% for the month.
The Nasdaq 5HANDL Index returned 3.5% for the month. The Nasdaq 7 HANDL Index, the 1.3x leveraged version of the index, returned 4.4% in December while the Nasdaq 10 HANDL Index, the 2.0x leveraged version of the index, delivered a 6.5% return.
A strong month helped the Core Large Cap Equity category maintain its leadership position with a 44% return for 2023. Declining interest rates drove up bond prices, pushing the Core Fixed Income category to a respectable 5.5% return for the year.
All but one category included in the Nasdaq HANDLS Indexes delivered positive performance for the year in 2023. Leading the category pack in the Explore Portfolio were Growth & Income (+22.7%), MLPs (+21.4) and Dividend Equity (+14.5%). Utilities finished the year as the weakest category (-7.85% for 2023) and was the only category in the Nasdaq Dorsey Wright Explore portion of HANDLS Indexes with negative returns in 2023.
On a year-to-date basis, the Nasdaq 5HANDL Index was up 12.6%, versus returns of 14.8% and 19.7% for the Nasdaq 7 HANDL Index and Nasdaq 10 HANDL Index.
