October Rebound

After a tumultuous September, the equity markets rebounded in October, with the Core Large Cap Equity cate- gory delivering a healthy 5.5% return. Rising interest rates continued to push bond prices down, however, and the Core Fixed Income category lost 1.2%.

Results for other income-oriented categories largely tracked the core categories. Every equity category deliv- ered positive returns, with MLPs once again leading the pack with a 14.6% return. Dividend equities also outper- formed the broader equity market, delivering a 10.0% return for the month.

Every fixed-income category lost ground during the month except for High Yield Bonds, which returned 3.2%. Preferred Securities delivered the worst returns of any income-oriented category, losing 3.8%.

Rebounding from a difficult September, the Nasdaq 5HANDL Index returned 3% for the month. The Nasdaq 7 HANDL Index, the 1.3x leveraged version of the index, gained 3.8% in August while the Nasdaq 10 HANDL In- dex, the 2.0x leveraged version of the index, delivered a 5.5% return.

On a year-to-date basis, MLPs are up 35.8% and the only income-oriented category with positive returns. Nota- ble laggards include Core Large Cap Equity (down 25.8%) and interest-rate-sensitive REITs (down 25.7%)

The Nasdaq 5HANDL Index is down 14.2% year to date, versus returns of -18.4% and -28.3% for the Nasdaq 7HANDL Index and Nasdaq 10 HANDL Index, respectively.
